TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Scientists in South Florida have developed a artistic new piece of expertise that they hope will assist catch invasive pythons within the Everglades.
The South Florida Water Administration District mentioned it teamed up with scientists on the College of Florida to develop the robotic bunnies.
They’re solar-powered and emit warmth and smells that lure pythons by mimicking actual rabbits, a typical meals supply for pythons and different snakes. With a digital camera hidden inside, SFWMD can see when the robo bunnies detect snake exercise, then workers can pinpoint a location and safely seize the snake.
“Invasive pythons pose an enormous menace to native wildlife like wading birds, small mammals, and reptiles,” the district mentioned. “That’s why we’re getting artistic and staying dedicated to defending this delicate ecosystem.”
