The Miccosukee Tribe confirmed Friday night that its former longtime chairman Billy Cypress had handed away.
Present Chairman Talbert Cypress, who turned chairman in 2021, confirmed the information on Instagram, releasing a press release on behalf of the Tribe in honor of Billy Cypress, who was first elected to the Miccosukee Enterprise Council in 1973 after which served 26 years as chairman.
“Throughout his tenure, Billy Cypress oversaw the institution of the Tribe’s gaming operations, the enlargement and professionalization of most of the Tribe’s administrative departments, and have become the main advocate for the Tribe and for the Everglades,” the assertion learn. “Many in South Florida first turned conscious of the Tribe via his advocacy and outreach.”
The Tribe didn’t instantly affirm his reason behind dying, nonetheless sources advised Native 10 Information that he had been battling most cancers.
In his assertion Friday, Talbert Cypress expressed his deep respect and admiration for his predecessor, touting his quite a few accomplishments.
“Thanks in your humor, your dedication, and your service,” he wrote.
Billy Cypress’ age was not confirmed within the Tribe’s assertion.
