FORT MYERS, Fla. (WFLA) — A Delta flight sure for Fort Lauderdale made an emergency touchdown Monday after a passenger’s private battery caught fireplace mid-flight and started filling the cabin with smoke.
Flight 1334 from Atlanta was not removed from its vacation spot when the hearth occurred.
Flight attendants shortly extinguished the burning gadget, which, in an announcement offered to NBC affiliate WBBH, Delta Air Strains stated was believed to be a private battery.
The crew was compelled to divert to Southwest Florida Worldwide Airport in Fort Myers attributable to lingering smoke.
The pilot stated over the radio, “OK, so the uh, the backpack has been contained. We predict it was a lithium, uhh, battery that uh, prompted the smoke and the hearth. It is in a containment bag,” in audio from liveatc.web.
Officers stated the airplane landed safely in Fort Myers, and no accidents have been reported among the many 185 passengers and 6 crew members onboard.
“We respect the fast work and actions by our folks to observe their coaching, and we apologize to our prospects for the delay of their travels,” a Delta spokesperson stated in an announcement.
The airline stated it was working to assist passengers attain their locations as shortly as attainable following the diversion. The Boeing 757-200 was taken out of service for additional inspection.
