    Dominican national accused of illegally voting in Broward under assumed identity

    FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A forty five-year-old man illegally dwelling in the US stole an American’s identification and used it to vote in Broward County, in accordance with federal prosecutors.

    Dominican nationwide Carlos Jose Abreu appeared in Fort Lauderdale federal courtroom on Monday, dealing with expenses of impersonating a United States citizen when registering to vote and when voting in a federal election.

    Prosecutors mentioned he had pleaded responsible on Jan. 8 to passport utility fraud and aggravated identification theft.

    Based on the U.S. Division of Justice, Abreu got here to the U.S. illegally about 20 years in the past.

    Prosecutors mentioned he moved to Florida and stole the sufferer’s identification in 2007 after New Jersey authorities issued an arrest warrant in opposition to him for expenses of kidnapping, sexual assault, endangering a baby and legal restraint.

    Abreu used the stolen identification to acquire a Florida driver’s license and apply for a passport, authorities allege.

    Officers mentioned he registered to vote underneath the assumed identification in 2020 and voted within the 2022 midterm elections.

    If convicted, he faces as much as 15 years in federal jail and is topic to deportation, in accordance with the DOJ.

    As of Monday night, Abreu is being held on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service on the Broward Fundamental Jail.
