    3-year-old shoots himself with loaded handgun left on couch: affidavit

    BELLE GLADE, Fla. (WFLA) — A 3-year-old boy by accident shot himself within the hand with a handgun that was left on the sofa, based on an arrest affidavit.

    On Monday, detectives with the Palm Seaside County Sheriff’s Workplace responded to Lakeside Medical Heart in Belle Glade to analyze the occasions main as much as the kid’s damage.

    It was found the toddler shot himself within the left hand with the loaded CZ P-10 S handgun that was left on a sofa.

    An investigator with the Division of Kids and Households spoke to the younger boy on the hospital about his damage when he advised them, “I shot it with a gun…I shot myself! I shot it! I used to be crying.”

    A neighbor advised detectives they heard one gunshot, adopted by a baby’s scream. The scream was heard on the neighbor’s ring digicam video, accompanied by the kid seen strolling towards the parking zone whereas holding his hand, the affidavit mentioned.

    When deputies carried out a search of the house, they discovered a single shell casing in the lounge and blood droplets on the ground.

    In accordance with the affidavit, two adults had been speaking out on the entrance porch once they heard a “pop” and ran again inside to seek out the toddler bleeding from his hand. 24-year-old Jashawn Mathis, the proprietor of the gun, wrapped the kid’s hand in a towel and rushed him to the hospital.

    Mathis advised detectives he carries the handgun for defense and sometimes shops it in a snap-sealed field on prime of the kitchen cupboard. Nevertheless, on today, he claimed to have by accident left the gun unsecured on the sofa whereas he was exterior.

    It’s unclear what the connection is between Mathis and the kid.

    Mathis was charged with baby neglect and culpable negligence. He’s set to be arraigned on April 28.
